Poll: Have you ever had to use a firearm in self-defense or defense of others?

This week’s poll asks if you’ve ever had to defend yourself or others with a firearm. It will be open until Monday, December 7 at 6:00 p.m. CST.

Last week’s poll (another “political one”) remains open until tomorrow at 6:00. Turns out these political polls have proven unpopular with the hardcore and politically cynical (or realistic) TZP crowd. It’ll be a while before we do another of those.

  1. Never.

The last time I had to “remove” a stranger from my home, I had to do it unarmed, with my sleeping infant daughter in my arms. Not exactly ideal defensive circumstances.

Luckily, he was drunk/high, and possibly concussed from a previous beating (he was in really rough shape by the time he showed up on our doorstep), and getting him out wasn’t too hard. Still, I shudder to think how it might have ended, and wished (and still wish) I had had more options than stern words and empty-hand skills.

    Never again.

  2. My dad one time had a drunk break the glass on his front door thinking it was his house. The guy then reached inside and tried to unlock the door, my dad grabbed his hand and pushed it back out. This continued for as long as it took for the police to get there.
My dad said he didn’t want to hurt the guy, he was so drunk he really thought he was home. I had grown up and no longer lived at home, but this was still a long time ago. Now, if my dad were alive, I am sure his reaction probably would have to be less charitable. Things have changed, unfortunately. Even in the small towns.

  3. Fortunately, I’ve never been in such a situation. But still, I have several guns in the house loaded and ready to go, and after dark one is always within arm’s reach. I watch TV with it in front of me, it’s on the counter when I cook, and it comes into the bathroom with me too. I also carry concealed everywhere – ‘gun free’ or not.

I believe in the “resist evil and it shall flee from you” teaching. I think ‘evil’ knows who is an easy target, and by staying armed it generally avoids troubling you.
