A Shooting in Virginia (UPDATED)

There was a shooting in Virginia today. The shooter, a former WDBJ journalist pulled a gun on two of the station’s reporters and killed them both. He also wounded the woman being interviewed on the air. She is thankfully listed in stable condition. He then proceeded to drive north on I-81 and east on I-66 with police in pursuit before shooting himself in the head.

Before the bodies of 24-year-old reporter Alison Parker and 27-year-old cameraman Adam Ward were even cold, Virginia’s opportunistic swine of a governor Fast Terry McAuliffe started immediately calling for more gun control.

“There are too many guns in the hands of people that shouldn’t have guns,” McAuliffe said during an interview with WTOP. “There is too much gun violence in America,” he said, adding that he has long advocated for strengthening gun background checks and that it should be made a priority.

The only problem with Fast Terry’s contention is that no background check would have stopped Vester Lee Flanagan from purchasing a gun.

Let’s for a moment ignore the fact that he could quickly and easily have gotten a firearm through illegal means.

Let’s for a moment forget that Vester Lee Flanagan did not have a criminal record, and the only crime he had ever been charged with was driving with an altered or revoked licence and having no registration on his vehicle in Pitt County, North Carolina in 2004, which certainly would not have made him ineligible to purchase a firearm.  And he had no history of mental illness either. In other words, he would have passed any background check any time.

So what would Fast Terry suggest?

Depriving him of his Second Amendment right, because he had a history of filing grievances against his employers?

How about making him ineligible to purchase a firearm because he was black? Or gay?

Or how about taking away his rights because he was upset about being fired and refused to leave, forcing the station to call the police to physically remove him from the premises? Would Terry have infringed on his right to keep and bear arms, because he was a jerk to his co-workers?

I’ve always said that the gun grabbers’ goal was not to reduce violence or save lives, but to disarm those of us who committed no crime whatsoever all for the sake of political expediency.

Fast Terry knows perfectly well that no new law would have stopped this shooting. Flanagan would have passed every background check in the world, so the only option left is for Fast Terry to start working to deny others their rights. Others who may be odd… or gay… or black… or difficult to work with…

As my friend Mike said in an article a long time ago, these politicians want to keep guns out of the “wrong hands” – your hands.

UPDATE: In an interview with Megyn Kelly last night, Alison Parker’s father pledged to do everything in his power to keep guns out of the hands of people he called “crazy.”

I grieve along with Mr. Parker. I cannot imagine the unbearable grief of losing a child! I understand the emotion behind that pledge to shame “legislators into doing something about closing loopholes and background checks.”

However, I also understand the following as a rational person: There was no loophole, and no background check that could have prevented Flanagan from getting a firearm! He was not even seeing a psychiatrist! He was not a prohibited person. There is no background check he would not have passed. The fact that he was an entitled jerk, a bad employee, and a crappy co-worker does not make him mentally ill or ineligible to own a firearm.

There is literally no loophole and no law that allowed him – a law abiding citizen, until he pulled that trigger yesterday – to purchase a gun when he should not have been allowed to do so. None.

And yet, in the heat of grief, the push for more ineffective laws that will do nothing but disarm those who have committed no crime continues, with the likes of Fast Terry and Hillary Clinton leading the charge.

Not All of Hollywood is Anti-Gun, Clueless, and Anti-Israel

I will admit I’m a fan of crime dramas. I will watch episodes of Law & Order endlessly, and my latest interest is Criminal Minds – a show about the FBI’s behavioral analysis unit. I tend not to look at the politics of a show. If I did, the writing, plot, and characterization would be sullied for me in most cases. I also try not to pay attention to the politics of the actors, unless they become so unbearable and preachy, that I am unable to separate the screeching lunacy from the character, in which case, the actor’s talent can be called into question.

The reason I bring this up is because as you may know, the majority of Hollywood is leftist, and most actors are sworn enemies of the Second Amendment – from their gated communities and guarded mansions, of course.

One, however, stands out from the pile of mindless, sheltered, spoiled celebrities – Joe Mantegna one of the stars of the aforementioned Criminal Minds.

A recent Ammoland article shows Mantegna as not just friend to the Second Amendment, but also friend to Israel – a combination you won’t often find in Hollywood.

IWI US, Inc., a subsidiary of Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) Ltd., announces it will be donating two TAVOR® rifles to be auctioned off at the next “Bullets & Bagels” event to be held Aug. 23, 2015 at the Raahauges Range in Corona, California. Joe Mantegna, best known for playing Special Agent David Rossi in the acclaimed TV show “Criminal Minds” and for portraying Joey Zasa in “The Godfather Part III” will be conducting the auction. Proceeds from the auction will be going to Friends of the IDF, an organization dedicated to supporting the men and women soldiers of the Israeli Defense Forces who defend the state of Israel and to the families of fallen IDF soldiers.

As you can imagine, some Middle Eastern media outlets aren’t all that happy about Mr. Mantegna proudly showing his support for Israel.

Hollywood actors have been long supporting Israeli aggression against Palestinians through various means, such as direct fund-raising events or making movies backing Israeli interpretation and catalyzation of the ongoing unrest in the middle-east.

The obvious lunacy of that claim aside, keep crying those bitter tears, Pakistani media. They taste like WINNING!

Seattle Taking Stupid Pills

OK, who put the stupid in Seattle’s water?

The city council in that den of dimwittery has unanimously approved a “gun violence” tax.

Under the new law, referred to as the “gun violence tax,” gun and ammo sales in the city are subject to a tax of $25 per firearm at sale and $0.05 for every round of ammunition at sale ($0.02 for every round of .22 caliber ammunition and smaller). Seattle’s City Budget Office estimates that the gun violence tax will raise between $300,000 and $500,000 per year: revenue raised under the tax will be earmarked for violence prevention.

Some gun rights opponents dolts claim that the tax will deter potential criminals from buying a gun which would be used to commit a violent crime.

Because criminals so often buy their guns legally? Because there are no firearms available on the black market or from a local drug dealer? Because they can’t borrow or steal a firearm? A $25 fee will somehow deter someone intent on committing violence from doing so?

A similar tax was adopted in Cook County, IL, and that apparently has not in any way prevented the carnage that’s going on over there! Do the city council members think that somehow their results will be different?

Chances are a special tax on constitutionally protected purchases will do nothing to stop crime.

What it MIGHT do is prevent those who purchase guns legally from doing so in Seattle. And once Seattle gun shops start losing business – and if they lose enough of it – they might want to consider relocating to an environment that’s more friendly to both the Second Amendment and the free market. And once they relocate, how much in tax revenue are you going to lose, morons?

Additionally, what it also will do is make effective tools of self defense more cost prohibitive to the very people who need said tools the most: the poor, who tend to live in not so nice neighborhoods, and for whom the $25 might mean either purchase of a firearm with which to defend their families from thugs who will more likely than not get their guns illegally anyway or food on the table, but not both.

Why do the elitist members of the Seattle City Council hate the poor?

Given the abject FAIL that was Cook County’s “violence reduction tax,” why do the members of the Seattle City Council insist on repeating the insanity?

Apparently the entire city council fell out of the stupid tree and hit every branch on the way down.

I can only hope that every gun shop owner picks up and leaves the city and that businesses outside the city benefit from the sales while Seattle hemorrhages tax revenue. If there’s any common sense or justice in this world, it will happen.

Tears for our society

Those who know me well know I don’t cry easily. I’m generally pretty stoic, and with a few exceptions, I tend to get enraged rather than weepy. Lately it’s been a different story, however. This year has been a difficult one in many ways, and I’ve found myself moved, touched, enraged, teary eyed, and downright hysterical crying at times. There’s a lot going on, both in my personal life and in the world around me, in general, and I seem to be getting a lot more emotional in my old age…

So I cried recently at the vicious stabbing death of Kevin Sutherland earlier this month. Those of you who are unfamiliar with the incident, the 26-year-old man was on a metro train on Independence Day when an 18-year-old savage attacked him for his cell phone. Jasper Spires repeatedly punched, kicked, and stabbed Sutherland and left the former Congressional intern bleeding on the train floor as other passengers watched.

I didn’t just cry because this tragic incident ended a promising young life.

I didn’t just cry because as someone who lives in Northern Virginia, I consider Washington, DC very much my city.

I didn’t just cry, because as a Virginian I enjoy my right to carry my tool of self defense, both openly and concealed with no impediments.

I didn’t just cry because, the moment I step on the Metro and make my way to my Washington, DC, that respect for my rights no longer exists.

No, all of this is tragic, but nothing new.

What I did cry about was the disintegration of our society exemplified in this  tragedy. This is what I find most tragic. This is what has kept me up at night as I thought about what I would have done had I been on that train on Independence Day.

As a veteran, I have a certain attitude – a certain mindset, if you will. I joined the military after college graduation rather than getting that high-paying job at a brokerage I was considering, because I felt I wanted to serve the nation that gave me so many opportunities I would have never had as a citizen of the former USSR. I wanted to protect America’s people and America’s Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. I certainly didn’t do it for the paltry pay and the time away from my family. I took my oath with that goal in mind, and I took it seriously.

That attitude drives my thoughts about that day. Would I have intervened? Would I have attacked the thug and beat him to within an inch of his life? Would I have saved Sutherland’s life? I certainly want to believe I would not have sat idly by and done nothing. I carry my firearm with the sincerest hope that I never have to draw it, but with the practiced attitude that should I have to, I would not hesitate to save a life. I like to think that attitude would carry over even when I am unarmed in a metro car. I’m not a weak, small person. I have no doubt I would have been injured, but I’m pretty damn sure I would have stopped that savage punk one way or another. Or at least tried my best…spores

But no one did anything. They all sat there and cowered. They all watched, and did nothing to help this guy, who got savaged because this barbarian punk wanted his cell phone. They stood by and did nothing.

Police consistently advise bystanders not to intervene.

Call the police, they say.

Do not confront the violent savages, they say.

Translation: let the victim die! Rely on us! We’ll protect you.

My aching arse.

And you know what? Most of these sheep do exactly that. From the tragic Kitty Genovese murder in 1964, to the attack on Marianne Seregi in which only one small woman had the courage to yell at the attackers (who were unarmed, by the way), to this current travesty…

…they did nothing.

Don’t tell me it’s some kind of psychological effect. I don’t want to hear excuses. This is simply a shift away from personal responsibility. It’s a shift away from courage, from humanity, from self-reliance.

And that’s what’s really tragic about the murder of Kevin Sutherland, other than the obvious loss of a young life! It is an overall societal abdication of every shred of self-reliance and accountability.

I weep for the kids who are taught from a young age not to stand up to bullies, but tell a teacher instead, even as they cower while the larger kid pummels them.

I weep for the children who are told they must wait for a nice policeman to arrive and protect them, rather than do their damnedest to defend themselves.

I weep for the cowards who are too afraid to stand up for themselves and for others, choosing instead to record brutal attacks with their damn smart phones while they wait for the police to arrive!

I weep for a society that reacts to brutal attacks on defenseless individuals by calling for government force to make them even more defenseless and vulnerable to armed thugs!

I weep for the pusillanimous weaklings who accept the message that they must rely on anyone else – be it big government, police, or anyone other than themselves who chooses to be armed and to take responsibility for their own safety and for the safety of those around them – to protect them.

It’s not any kind of psychological effect. It’s decades of indoctrination into the idea that you must rely on others for everything from putting food in your mouth and providing for you, to your very life.

It’s laziness.

It’s the unwillingness to be responsible for your own survival.

It’s the perception that everyone else is responsible for everyone else – their brother’s keeper – it takes a village.

It is this parasitic inability to fend for oneself that’s killing our society.

Someone else will protect me.

Someone will ensure I don’t starve.

There’s got to be someone who will intervene.

I’ll leave it to other people to carry a gun and to train with it. I’m afraid of guns. I’ll let others stand up.

Well, guess what, parasites! When you mewl to have the rest of us just as disarmed and defenseless as you are, there will be no one left to intercede on your behalf when a violent degenerate, who takes a large, steaming dump on the laws that you assiduously abide by and so stupidly insist others will obey, boards a metro train and stabs you to death while everyone watches in horror, because there’s no one around with the intestinal fortitude to help you!

You insist on disarming our military members while stateside, and they get slaughtered by frothing fundamentalist Islamic zealots. Just like they did at Fort Hood. Just like they did yesterday.

And then you will squeal and blame large-capacity magazines, the NRA, “gun fetishists,” and “loopholes” for the fact that this society has descended into a whining, spineless, triggering, social justice warrior-ruled swamp of hurt feelings and demands that someone, ANYONE but you, do something!

RIP, Kevin Sutherland.

RIP, GySgt Thomas J. Sullivan.

RIP, LCpl Skip Wells.

RIP, Staff Sgt. David Wyatt.

RIP, Sgt. Carson Holmquist.

RIP, Petty Officer Randall Smith.

Your government failed you by disarming you, but your society failed you worse – by both demanding that your government disarm you and failing to act on your behalf after the government leeches made you vulnerable at their behest.

And if you’re not weeping for the demise of courage, honor, integrity, and strength in our society, you’re not paying attention.

No-brainer

San Francisco supervisor Mark Farrell says his new legislative proposal is a “no-brainer.” In the aftermath (no causative link intended) of the July 1 murder of Kate Steinle by an illegal alien scumbag, this gibbering yambag has decided to introduce a new gun control law in a city that already has some of the most draconian gun control laws in the country.

Under a proposal by Farrell, High Bridge and any other gun store that comes into town would have to videotape all gun and ammunition sales.

In addition, all ammunition sales records would have to be sent electronically to the San Francisco police department.

Never mind that the law would impact exactly one business, and that business already has what the owner describes as “high quality video cameras.”

Never mind there are some thorny privacy issues with sending ammunition purchase records to the SFPD.

Let’s put some more onerous requirements on the only business of its kind in the city and make it even more unattractive for others to begin operating there. That’s a great idea, Farrell, you jackass!

That’s how you paint a big, red target on the backs of your residents! Just make it impossible for them to make a legal, constitutionally-protected purchase of an effective tool of self defense.

Oh, and while you’re at it, make sure that you’re super-duper friendly to and welcome with open arms every illegal alien repeat felon scumbag that makes its way back into your city after being deported. Because DIVERSITY or something…

Oh, and by the way, did I mention that the gun said illegal alien repeat felon scumbag was wielding was stolen from the vehicle of a federal agent? Because they’re the only ones to be trusted with firearms, right?

Juan-Francisco-Lopez-Sanchez-jpg

Yeah, surely that camera in that lone San Francisco gun store and the idiotic ammunition sales requirement would have stopped Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez from not only getting the gun, but using it on an innocent woman! Not.

Here’s a no-brainer: stop welcoming and protecting every illegal alien felon who has been deported numerous times, and make it easier for your citizens to defend themselves against the ones who do sneak through!

But no… we couldn’t do that, because FEELINGS, and DIVERSITY, and for the CHILDREN, and SHUT UP, RACIST!

FBI: Oooops! Background check FAIL! Must be a “loophole”

Unlike many Zelman Partisans, my writing tends to be sarcastic, caustic, and somewhat snarky. While my beautiful colleagues write about Israel and Jewishness,  and principles, I tend to speak on subjects that either ruffle my feathers, or are so absurd, one is left shaking one’s head in disbelief at the FAIL.

Such is the FBI’s admission last week that the slaughter at a traditionally black church in South Carolina by a racist, psychotic piece of sub-human detritus (I refuse to use his name and give him publicity). It’s snortworthy for two reasons:

  1. The scumbag shouldn’t have been able to purchase a gun in the first place, but thanks to a lapse in the FBI’s background checks system, he had no problem legally buying one.
  2. The gun grabbers are calling the problem a “loophole.”

Let’s ignore for a moment the fact that no background check would have stopped the cretinous racist from buying a weapon. If he was denied a purchase due to a failed background check, there are numerous black market ways for this schmuck to score a firearm. Even the government admits that the vast majority of guns used in crimes are purchased on the black market/from a street dealer, stolen, or “borrowed” from friends and family. Anyone who claims otherwise needs a quick lesson in economics and history.

Let’s also ignore the fact that forcing an individual to undergo a background check for a constitutionally-protected purchase is a slap in the face to freedom.

Let’s focus on the fact that the liars at Everytown for Gun Safety Confiscation immediately sprang into action by claiming that an  NRA-backed loophole was responsible for the trash being able to get his paws on a firearm – a claim directly contradicted by the FBI and reported in that bastion of objective journalism the Washington Post.

The breakdown was a result of errors not only by the FBI but also apparently by local law enforcement, and Comey said he has ordered a 30-day review to examine the procedures that led to the failure and to see if the process can be tightened. The errors came to light as investigators examined a gun purchase Roof made two months before the shooting.

Ooops! Government error? The hell, you say!

government-incompetence-at-work

Of course, facts never stop gun-grabbing liars from promoting their odious agenda. Facts are merely inconvenient little nits to be slapped down and manipulated…

…for the children, of course!

Because, really… how would it look if the gun grabbers’ response to mistakes made by a bumbling bureaucracy that allowed a violent offender to massacre innocent people was to demand… more bumbling bureaucracy?

So in an effort to protect the narrative, “government error” became “NRA-supported loophole,” in which case I demand that the “loophole” which allowed a loon to climb the White House fence and make it all the way to the door while the Secret Service stood idly by and did nothing be immediately closed! Also the “loophole” that allowed the Chinese access to millions of files containing private information of both military and civilian government employees. Yeah… I’ll need that closed too.

As If We Didn’t Know Already

Karl Rove is a jackass.

I know this is not news to most of us who have even the slightest knowledge of American politics. After all, Rove was one of the “geniuses” behind the eight years of Bush we were subjected to between 2001 and 2009. And now he’s dedicated himself to spearheading efforts to elect… um… “electable” candidates – and by “electable,” I mean having no morals, ethics, or strong views due to a passionate desire only to get elected, vice actually serve the populace.

Well, as if you needed more proof that Rove is a tool, he’s decided to up his cred as one of the most dangerous and pathetic humans in the political sphere. When Chris Wallace asked Rove in a Fox News interview about the Emmanuel African Methodist Church in Charleston, SC  how we can, “stop the violence,” dimwit sniveled that the only way to guarantee they will stop is to “remove guns from society.”

Now maybe there’s some magic law that will keep us from having more of these. I mean basically the only way to guarantee that we will dramatically reduce acts of violence involving guns is to basically remove guns from society, and until somebody gets enough “oomph” to repeal the Second Amendment, that’s not going to happen.

Well, of course that’s not going to happen! Because people like us stand up to people like Rove and his beloved compromisers! After all it’s Rove and crew that helped give us gun control-loving Mitt Romney as a presidential candidate in 2012.

But what Rove said is more dangerous and stupid than you might think. For one, it gives gun grabbers ammunition to claim, “Look! Here’s a conservative admitting that repealing the Second Amendment would dramatically reduce gun violence! BIPARTISANSHIP!

But it’s even more stupid, because it presents a false premise. Not only is it logistically and practically impossible to remove guns from society, but it allows the gun grabbers to set the rules of the playing field. GUN violence is not the problem. Violence writ large is.  And additionally, as the British experiment has proven after the UK all but banned firearms after the Dunblane massacre, removing guns from society does absolutely nothing to mitigate the problem.

Removing guns from society will not reduce violence. The Cumbria shooting still happened in the UK – even after the government instituted stringent gun control – resulting in 12 fatalities and 11 injuries. Terrorists still bombed the public transport system in London in 2005. Japan has virtually eliminated all shooting deaths by banning most firearms, but that doesn’t mean violence has gone away.

And yet, Rove stupidly allowed the gun grabbers to frame the narrative and put the right to keep and bear arms in the crosshairs, so to speak.

Perhaps if the gun grabbers stopped pushing for the disarmament of this nation’s most vulnerable potential victims and started promoting responsible gun ownership, personal responsibility, and self defense, we could drastically reduce violent rampages like the one that claimed the lives of churchgoers in South Carolina.

And as for Karl Rove… STOP TRYING TO HELP!

They Just Keep Pushing

I don’t know if it’s because there are national elections next year, but the Democrats in Washington and nationwide just keep pushing gun control measure after gun control measure. It’s as if they think that tossing a ton of new legislative proposals at us is like tossing a pot of spaghetti at a wall – one or two are bound to stick, right?

The latest unconstitutional attempt to kick gun owners in the gut (or lower) comes from Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-imwit, Md.), who has decided that in order to exercise your fundamental rights to a) make a legitimate purchase and b) use the most effective tool to defend your family and your property, you must have a license – a permission from the federal government. No, it’s not the same as applying for a permit to carry a concealed weapon, which is ineffective and unconstitutional in and of itself. The Handgun Purchaser Licensing Act would require anyone wishing to purchase certain firearms to get permission from the feds first. In addition to that, the proposal bars anyone under the age of 21 (old enough to serve in the Armed Forces and protect and defend the Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic, but not old enough to protect themselves or their families against armed thugs) from buying a gun, and yank federal funding from states that refuse to implement this onerous legislation.

Now, there’s obviously no chance of this travesty ever passing Congress… unless Boehner and the other put-the-finger-in-the-wind-and-see-which-way-public-opinion-is-blowing legisleeches overdose on the gun grabber Kool-Aid. That said, Van Hollen and the other gun grabbing, authoritarian swine in Washington are wasting time and resources on proposals they know have no chance of passage.

My educated guess is that with the general election approaching next year, they have to show the hands that feed them (read: Bloomberg, Soros, et. al.) that they’re actually doing something. It may not be something realistic, constitutional, or even sane…

…but it’s something.

“Of the thousands of Americans murdered every single year by firearms, nearly 90 percent of those deaths occur with a handgun,” Van Hollen said. “With mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and friends dying every day because of guns, there is no question that gun violence is tearing at the fabric of our communities.”

Of course, this is a lie – or as gun grabbers would claim after being debunked, a “hyperbole.”  The FBI Violent Crime Statistics show less than 70 percent of homicides in the United States in 2013 were committed with firearms – and that’s all firearms, not just handguns. And handguns comprised 68.4 percent of the firearms used in murder and non-negligent manslaughter incidents in 2013, according to the FBI’s expanded data set.

In other words, Van Hollen’s claims are so much garbage. And considering only a tiny percentage of all gun-related homicides are actually committed with legally-owned firearms, licensing law abiding citizens to make constitutional purchases will do next to nothing to reduce violence committed with handguns, but hey… they’re doing something, right?

Of course, I’m not addressing the more onerous agenda that could be present behind these efforts: disinformation.

We all know how hard it is to pull back information in the digital age. Once it’s out there, it’s out there, and no amount of retractions, debunking, and truth to counter said lies will help.

We also know that the majority of Americans do very little fact checking. They get their information via Internet memes, Twitter, and short snippets of news. I like to call it McNews – the fast food of journalism. Policy makers rely on this. So does the media. And putting wrong, inflated, erroneous, or outright false information out there ensures that at least a certain percentage of the population immediately assimilates it and propagates it.

The lies become part of the fabric of the Internet.

That’s why even if these measures have no chance of passage, those of us who know the facts must act to disseminate them and counter all the polluted information spread by those with an obvious political agenda.

That’s why even though I know Van Hollen’s and others’ lunatic proposals are so much crap, I will continue to point out their lies and spread the truth.

It’s not about ensuring the measures never pass. They wont.

It’s about ensuring that the truth gets out.

Shannon Watts Drools Inanities… Again

No one can accuse demented Mommy Demanding Action Shannon Watts of not taking advantage of an opportunity. Over the weekend, a man planted pipe bombs outside the Dallas, TX  police headquarters before opening fire on the building. James Boulware apparently lost it and decided to go on a killing spree of police, because he blamed them for losing custody of his son.

Shannon decided, however, that the time was right to blame the passage of an open carry law in Texas for the act of a demented criminal. The open carry law that won’t go into effect until January 2016.

Any reasonable, sane person would read this and laugh, but Shannon’s supporters and the Mad Mommies Demanding Disarmament are re-Tweeting Shannon’s inanity, almost certainly without actually checking the facts of the story.

Hey, fact checking is HAAAAARD!

Just your latest in gun grabber stoopid brought to you by Twitter and the letter “D” for “Dolt.”

Dear Dr. Rosen…

I recently read your letter to the editor of the Greensboro News and Record.  In it you claim that since “physicians’ advice to patients routinely includes urging safe sex to protect against sexually transmitted diseases; using seat belts and child car seats; urging smokers to quit; and providing vaccines against flu and pneumonia,” you should be able to give your patients advice on firearms safety – advice I’m not sure you’re qualified to give.

So I tell ya what…

Why don’t you provide documentation of your qualifications to dispense firearms advice — and please include any hard copy certificates, proof of knowledge about the mechanics of firearms, your training as a safety expert in the field, etc. — and I’ll think about allowing you to dispense said advice to my family.

If you don’t have said training, I would propose you increase your malpractice insurance coverage to include advice you’re not even remotely qualified to give based on the following batch of stupid, “Inquiring if there are guns in the home, and whether they are locked, kept separate from ammunition and out of reach of children is basic.

a) It’s none of your business.

b) Teaching gun safety to children appropriately and keeping an eye on them if there are guns in the house is basic.

c) Will you pay for the medical costs of the rape or assault victim after a confrontation with an armed thug, who took advantage of the precious seconds his victim took to fumble with the gun lock, retrieve the ammunition, thanks to your advice?

Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Now, I’m not a big fan of legislating silence. I wouldn’t be thrilled with a North Carolina legislative proposal that would restrict doctors’ ability to discuss guns in the home. Except, from what I’m seeing, that’s not what the bill does.

Any written questionnaire or other written form a health care provider asks a patient or the patient’s  parent,  guardian,  or  custodian to  complete that  contains  any  question  regarding  the patient’s lawful  ownership,  possession,  handling,  storage,  maintenance  of, or  other  conduct involving firearms and ammunition shall clearly and conspicuously contain or have attached to it a notice that the patient is not required to answer any question related to those matters. The notice  shall  be  located  or  provided  in  a  manner that  is  clearly  visible  to  the  patient prior  to completion of any questionnaire or other written form containing a question about firearms and ammunition as provided in this section.

It merely makes sure that the patient understands he or she is under no obligation to answer your questions or bow to your paranoia.

I’m pretty sure it will also allow the patient to make an informed decision about whether or not they want to keep you as a physician, since you feel yourself qualified to dispense medical advice without proper training in firearms or their safe handling.

Heck, I’d be finding myself a new doctor right quick.

Maybe that’s what you’re worried about?
