No-brainer

San Francisco supervisor Mark Farrell says his new legislative proposal is a “no-brainer.” In the aftermath (no causative link intended) of the July 1 murder of Kate Steinle by an illegal alien scumbag, this gibbering yambag has decided to introduce a new gun control law in a city that already has some of the most draconian gun control laws in the country.

Under a proposal by Farrell, High Bridge and any other gun store that comes into town would have to videotape all gun and ammunition sales.

In addition, all ammunition sales records would have to be sent electronically to the San Francisco police department.

Never mind that the law would impact exactly one business, and that business already has what the owner describes as “high quality video cameras.”

Never mind there are some thorny privacy issues with sending ammunition purchase records to the SFPD.

Let’s put some more onerous requirements on the only business of its kind in the city and make it even more unattractive for others to begin operating there. That’s a great idea, Farrell, you jackass!

That’s how you paint a big, red target on the backs of your residents! Just make it impossible for them to make a legal, constitutionally-protected purchase of an effective tool of self defense.

Oh, and while you’re at it, make sure that you’re super-duper friendly to and welcome with open arms every illegal alien repeat felon scumbag that makes its way back into your city after being deported. Because DIVERSITY or something…

Oh, and by the way, did I mention that the gun said illegal alien repeat felon scumbag was wielding was stolen from the vehicle of a federal agent? Because they’re the only ones to be trusted with firearms, right?

Juan-Francisco-Lopez-Sanchez-jpg

Yeah, surely that camera in that lone San Francisco gun store and the idiotic ammunition sales requirement would have stopped Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez from not only getting the gun, but using it on an innocent woman! Not.

Here’s a no-brainer: stop welcoming and protecting every illegal alien felon who has been deported numerous times, and make it easier for your citizens to defend themselves against the ones who do sneak through!

But no… we couldn’t do that, because FEELINGS, and DIVERSITY, and for the CHILDREN, and SHUT UP, RACIST!

FBI: Oooops! Background check FAIL! Must be a “loophole”

Unlike many Zelman Partisans, my writing tends to be sarcastic, caustic, and somewhat snarky. While my beautiful colleagues write about Israel and Jewishness,  and principles, I tend to speak on subjects that either ruffle my feathers, or are so absurd, one is left shaking one’s head in disbelief at the FAIL.

Such is the FBI’s admission last week that the slaughter at a traditionally black church in South Carolina by a racist, psychotic piece of sub-human detritus (I refuse to use his name and give him publicity). It’s snortworthy for two reasons:

  1. The scumbag shouldn’t have been able to purchase a gun in the first place, but thanks to a lapse in the FBI’s background checks system, he had no problem legally buying one.
  2. The gun grabbers are calling the problem a “loophole.”

Let’s ignore for a moment the fact that no background check would have stopped the cretinous racist from buying a weapon. If he was denied a purchase due to a failed background check, there are numerous black market ways for this schmuck to score a firearm. Even the government admits that the vast majority of guns used in crimes are purchased on the black market/from a street dealer, stolen, or “borrowed” from friends and family. Anyone who claims otherwise needs a quick lesson in economics and history.

Let’s also ignore the fact that forcing an individual to undergo a background check for a constitutionally-protected purchase is a slap in the face to freedom.

Let’s focus on the fact that the liars at Everytown for Gun Safety Confiscation immediately sprang into action by claiming that an  NRA-backed loophole was responsible for the trash being able to get his paws on a firearm – a claim directly contradicted by the FBI and reported in that bastion of objective journalism the Washington Post.

The breakdown was a result of errors not only by the FBI but also apparently by local law enforcement, and Comey said he has ordered a 30-day review to examine the procedures that led to the failure and to see if the process can be tightened. The errors came to light as investigators examined a gun purchase Roof made two months before the shooting.

Ooops! Government error? The hell, you say!

government-incompetence-at-work

Of course, facts never stop gun-grabbing liars from promoting their odious agenda. Facts are merely inconvenient little nits to be slapped down and manipulated…

…for the children, of course!

Because, really… how would it look if the gun grabbers’ response to mistakes made by a bumbling bureaucracy that allowed a violent offender to massacre innocent people was to demand… more bumbling bureaucracy?

So in an effort to protect the narrative, “government error” became “NRA-supported loophole,” in which case I demand that the “loophole” which allowed a loon to climb the White House fence and make it all the way to the door while the Secret Service stood idly by and did nothing be immediately closed! Also the “loophole” that allowed the Chinese access to millions of files containing private information of both military and civilian government employees. Yeah… I’ll need that closed too.

HaHaganah Museum

The next museum I will share with you is the HaHaganah museum in Tel Aviv. It was originally the meeting place of HaHaganah, because the building where the museum resides is the former home of Eliyahu Golomb, one of the founders of HaHaganah. Many an important meeting took place there. The topics would have ranged from how to get more Jewish refugees into Israel to defense of the settlements. The meetings held in the house were secret and they would have been conducted from1930-1945. In 1954 the building was sold to an entrepreneur and plans were made to demolish the building. Former members of the Haganah found out and intervened. They wanted the irreplaceable house built in 1923 turned into a museum. Said entrepreneur agreed. I guess anyone would. Who wants to argue with a bunch of ticked off Haganah. I suppose the owner didn’t want to mess with them. They got their museum.

HaHaganah was the evolution of Jewish Defense forces. The first group formed was Bar-Giora, named for Simon Bar Giora one of the leaders of the revolt against Rome. Meeting for the first time on September 28, 1907 in Ytizhak Ben-|Zvi’s apartment they set their goal. It was settle the land and guard it from Arabs. Their motto was

“In fire and blood did Judea fall; in blood and  fire Judea shall rise.”

This was also one of the mottoes of Jewish defenders during the Russian pogroms. Members had to have a years worth of farming experience as well to be in the Bar-Giora.

The Bar-Giora became the HaShomer in April 1909. HaShomer meant the Watchman. The HaShomer was larger and more organized than the Bar-Giora. The HaShomer set it’s goal to provide organized defense for all of the Jews living in “Palestine”. One of the first challenges they faced was lack of weapons, due to lack of the necessary funds. They finally obtained a loan & the necessary weapons were purchased and distributed. Many of the new owners refused to be separated from their new weapons even for a moment. They soon adopted the dress and customs of the local Bedouins, Druze and Circassians. As well as advancing from being units on foot to horseback. This is always a good thing to my way of thinking. Another challenge the HaShomer faced was shortage of ammunition. It was expensive and hard to procure. This led to secret production centers being set up. The HaShomer were quite effective in their duties, despite the fact at no time was there ever more than 100 members. In 1920 the HaShomer were disbanded to become HaHaganah. Just a quick note here, some people at work asked my opinion on a “Hosmer”. I had no idea what they were talking about. Travel broadens your knowledge base. I now know they probably wanted to know what I thought about the HaShomer! I think they were amazing!

In June 1920 HaHaganah (The Defense) came into being. Initially a loose group, the Arab riots of 1929 changed it’s nature. It changed from a militia to a mature military body. HaHaganah was independent of paying locals to be watchmen nor did they depend on foreign recognition. Though the British Security Forces did work with it to form a civilian militia. The British were mostly pro-Arab and anti-Zionist. At times they urged the Arabs to attack the Jewish settlers. The Arabs soon discovered they could control the immigration policies of the British by rioting. At times the British would work with the Arabs. The Arabs would riot and the British would withdraw their troops & the Jewish police leaving the Jews at the tender mercies of the rioting Arabs. There were many incidences where the casualty rate would have been much, much higher if not for HaHaganah. The British, in general, were proving to be about as good a friends to the new yishuv settlers as they were to the Irish about that time frame.

But even the British get a surprise once in a while. Charles Orde Wingate was just such a surprise. Wingate was born to a religious Christian family & firmly believed in the Bible. Therefore he also firmly believed that the Jewish people belonged in Israel, and he did everything possible to make that happen. He was a talented horseman, who had also studied Arabic and Semitic culture. In 1936 he earned the rank of Captain and the intelligence officer was transferred to Israel later that year.

When he arrived the Arabs were regularly attacking the British & the Jews. Wingate sized up the situation and formed S.N.S. or special night squads comprised mostly of HaHaganah. The were effective as offensive units as well as defensive. They could pre-empt as well as resist attacks and were very effective at helping the yishuv settlers. Therefore the S.N.S. was disliked by Arabs & British. The Yishuv called him “ha-yedid” The friend. Bet he was glad he had learned to speak Hebrew then! For Charles Orde Wingate it was first, last and always about the Jews belonging in Israel and being safe there. He was the perfect man, in the perfect place at the perfect time. Therefore in 1939 the Brits transferred him out. His passport was stamped with a restriction that he was not allowed to re-enter the country. You can’t make this stuff up. His influence lived on though in the people he had trained that went on to become heads of Palmach and later the IDF.

One heart wrenching incident that HaHaganah was unable to stop was the helpless settlers in the Hebron Massacre. The HaHaganah had gone to Hebron to offer their protection, but since the local Sephardic Jews had lived in peace with their Arabic neighbors for years they were concerned that the presence of HaHaganah could irritate the situation. The Haganah were sent away by the ONE British Policeman who had been recruited from the Black & Tans. The terror didn’t end even after they made it to The Beit Romano police station. The level of trust in the British to protect them, and the Arabs not to attack them was way too high, and the cost was very dear. There were stories of Arabs that acted to save the Jews, hiding them in their basements and cellars and defending them with their swords.

When the new settlers wanted to fight back, they had another conundrum. They were facing the bigger and well armed British army and their buddies with whom they also shared arms, The Arab Legion. One of the answers was the Davidka. Not an incredibly accurate weapon, it was loud and tended to scare the heck out of it’s targets.

Yes, a real Davidka
Yes, a real Davidka
Davidka Plaque
Davidka Plaque

Yes indeed! That is a real Davidka!

On May 26th 1948 David Ben-Gurion dissolved HaHaganah, and the other defensive groups to form the IDF.

Take away thoughts from HaHaganah museum: If you are going to trust your life and that of your family to someone, make VERY sure they are worthy it. Some mistakes can not be made up.

If you are going to defend yourself against a government that has no interest in your survival and is siding with your enemies? Weapons, effective weapons and lots of them are a must.

There may be people that were not born of your group that will fight harder for your group than some natural born members. Charles Orde Wingate was just such an incredible man, a G-d given gift to Israel and her new settlers.

Availability of weapons and ammunition is critical.
Availability of weapons and ammunition is critical.

The cost of re-inventing the wheel would be even more astronomical this time. We don’t need to do that. Attitudes are a big key in survival.

Defiance in the face of deadly evil

Yesterday, Y.B. wrote a remembrance of Lothar Kreyssig, a German judge who defied the Nazis. Kreyssig didn’t succeed in halting their genocidal plans, but he lived — and lived a good, meaningful life.

Unconsciously, it seems to have become part of modern myth that nobody, but nobody, in Germany openly defied the Nazis. Sure, people all over Europe covertly defied them in ways large and small. And partisans outside of Germany took up arms against them, attacking and fading into the woods. Finally, even the most downtrodden captives in Sobibor and Warsaw openly defended themselves against their monstrous tormentors.

But ordinary “Aryan” Germans? We’re so unaccustomed to thinking of them defying their rulers that “good German” remains a term of contempt 70 years after the fact.

But defy they did, even if it was rare and dangerous. Another example, besides Kreyssig’s refusal to give an official stamp to deadly eugenics, was the Rosenstrasse protest, in which “Aryan” wives laid their lives on the line to save their Jewish husbands.

The wives won. Some 1800 Jewish men were saved. Today, there’s a monument at the site of the protest that carries this inscription: “The strength of civil disobedience, the vigor of love overcomes the violence of dictatorship; Give us our men back; Women were standing here, defeating death; Jewish men were free.”

The wives not only saved their husbands. They revealed a weakness in the Nazi regime (that also applies to many tyrants in our day): even the worst brutes on earth squirm and cringe when the light of bad publicity shines on them.

—–

Germans also committed more acts of covert defiance than we give them credit for. A great example is a story that got quite a bit of coverage last year (two good versions here and here).

A German photographer, asked to submit entries for a Nazi-sponsored “perfect Aryan baby” contest, submitted the photo of a child he knew to be Jewish. Her adorable picture beat the rest of the competition and was printed on magazine covers and postcards.

The photographer didn’t ask the family’s permission and his act potentially put both them and himself in danger. At the time, the child’s parents were horrified. But today that baby (now known as Hessy Taft and a professor of chemistry in New York) says she’s quite proud to have been part of the deception.

The photographer wanted to prove that the Nazis were fools — and he succeeded wildly, even though he had to keep his victory and his laughter to himself.

—–

Just think how different, and how much less deadly, 20th century history might have been had even more “good Germans” showed their courage, anger, contempt, and love of decency and refused to be so “good.”

A Good Gun Story Gets Better (Lynne Russell Rocks)

A follow-up to “A Good Gun Story” (a “drive-by,” as Claire calls it): Lynne Russell, the marvelous, good kind of survivor (because so strong) is loaded for bear about those who would deny that guns saved her life and the life of her spouse.

Former CNN anchor Lynne Russell and former reporter Chuck de Caro came back into the news cycle on June 30, after they worked together to use a concealed firearm to defend themselves from a robber. Russell later spoke about how having a gun “absolutely” saved their lives, and had some tough words for those who do not own guns, yet advocate for government control.

“If you don’t want to carry, please don’t.” Russell said. “Then, shut the f–k up about it. Make your own decisions.“

Russell went on to say that “the discussion over the debate to own a gun is just ridiculous. As Americans we have the right to bear arms and as humans the right to protect ourselves. I’m sure that the man who shot my husband did not have a gun permit.” …

Remembering Lothar Kreyssig

On July 6th 1986, Lothar Ernst Paul Kreyssig, passed away after living a life of honor and principle.  This was especially so during times when it seemed these virtues were rapidly leaving the world forever.

A member of the Confessing Church, he spent his later years working vigorously to atone for the wrong his countrymen had wrought, believing that even those who resisted should have, and could have, done far more to stop the evil in their midst.

Trained in the law, in Leipzig, he became a district court judge. Soon he was transferred to Brandenburg an der Havel and his new duties were as a guardianship judge for the mentally ill.

Many people think of Nazi Germany as pioneers in the field of eugenics, but that is not really so. That distinction belongs to the United States and Great Britain, and included such names as Margaret Sanger and Sir Francis Galton. Still, the eager understudy, Germany made up time with persistence and passion.

By the summer of 1940 a program known as Aktion T4
was quietly in full swing. The flip-side to nationwide programs encouraging childbearing among Aryans, this program worked to create “Racial Hygene” by removing the ill, the infirm, the defective… the üntermenschen, from the gene-pool of the Master Race. A race for the New World Order.

But, being Germans, everything about this quiet program had to be nice and tidy, with all the documents organized and everything correct. And legal.

Judge Kreyssig kept seeing reams of odd paperwork, often nearly identical, except for the names, cross his desk for approval. Dozens, then hundreds of people were dying under his watch. He soon concluded that this was in fact a forced euthanasia program on a huge scale, and he was placing his own imprimatur on the horrible act.

He refused to do so.

Moreover, he wrote Minister of Justice Franz Gurtner, protesting in very strong terms the treatment of people under his charge, including now, prisoners and residents of a concentration camp, writing:

“What is right is what benefits the people. In the name of this frightful doctrine — as yet, uncontradicted by any guardian of rights in Germany — entire sectors of communal living are excluded from [having] rights, for example, all the concentration camps, and now, all hospitals and sanatoriums.”

Trusting in German Jurisprudence, Judge Kreyssig then filed criminal charges against the program administrator, and issued an injunction against the operation.

Judge Kreyssig was in for a rude awakening. He was called to a meeting by the Justice Minister, and shown a letter authorizing the Aktion T4 signed by Adolph Hitler himself.

This was the Führerprinzip (Leader Principle) in ‘action”. The Law must serve the State. The Leader embodies the State. Thus, the letter of the Law bends to the will of the Leader.

Horrified, but not stupid, Judge Kreyssig, this very powerful and respected jurist, narrowly avoided being sent by the Gestapo to a concentration camp himself. Marginalized over the next two years, he was finally forced to retire from the bench.

Most of us know of the trials of major political and military leaders of the Nazi regime at Nuremburg. There were also trials of morally corrupt Doctors, and of willing (or worse) Prosecutors and Judges.

It is said that when the Nazi Judges were tried by the Allies at Nuremburg, they looked everywhere for a  Judge who under the Regime steadfastly refused to do evil. They found just one:

Lothar Kreyssig.

But, after refusing the seduction of the National Socialist German Workers Party, since the Judge lived in Saxony, he had a new problem. He was now in the “East Zone”… soon to become the new Deutsche Demokratishe Republik. Communist, East Germany.

And, THEY wanted him to be a Judge. Having seen this show before, he refused.

A life-long Evangelical (Protestant) Christian, instead he returned to a prior focus on his faith and community, becoming President of his church for the province of Saxony, and on to many other positions of community leadership.

Most noteworthy, in 1958 Mr. Kreyssig founded the Action Reconciliation Service for Peace (ARSP), an international organization that continues to this day.

This organization’s view, as an outgrowth of the ideology of Confessing Church roots, calls for “repentance and reversal” on the part of those who do harm to others. Thus, in the context of postwar Germany, not just individual or communal guilt, but an earnest and direct request to aid those who were harmed.

The ARSP sends nearly two hundred volunteers annually to engage in long- and short-term social work for survivors in Belgium, France, the UK, the Netherlands, Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Belarus, Ukraine, Israel and the U.S.   Over the years thousands have served.

When faced with a society filled with mindless evil, Judge Kreyssig refused to bend. When lured by a sister-evil, he refused. Instead, Mr. Kreyssig worked the rest of his life for true reconciliation and encouraged others to follow his lead.

A model for us all.

In A Blink of An Eye! (by Israeli Standards)

Armed Jewish Kids

Only nine months after the slaughter in the synagogue at Har Nof, and in the face of a remarkable number of knifings, shootings, fire-bombings, rock attacks, and “automobile accidents”, the bureaucracy in Israel is slightly loosening their hold on civilian firearms carry.  And people are responding with vigor.   Maybe they should emulate Puerto Rico and move to dump the whole scheme?

Guest post: Three Crosses

The following is a guest post.

Three Crosses
By Larry Arnold

Back in the day the swastika was just another artistic graphic. Native Americans had used versions of it, so Boy Scouts beaded it into costumes. It was common in architectural embellishment, particularly for decorative borders.

Then the National Socialist Party adopted it as one of their symbols, started the most costly war in world history, and flew it over Auschwitz and Dachau.

After Germany’s defeat the Allies blew up, tore down, painted over, and plowed under the cross with bent arms because it had been used as a symbol of hatred and holocaust. The swastika was so evil it was necessary to ban it from ever appearing again.

Unfortunately, as history has repeatedly shown, banned symbols don’t fade away. Hating them simply adds hate, and instead, they gain power. Today, over a half-century after victory in Europe, anyone who hates Jews and wants to shatter the peace of a community can do so in five seconds, by spray painting on the synagogue door that same swastika.

On the other hand, when Jesus was alive the crucifix was a real symbol of Roman world domination and bloody repression, as well as a physical device for agonizing capital punishment of Rome’s enemies. After Christ’s execution, however, his followers embraced the symbol instead of purging it. Quite possibly they did so because, unlike the Allies, they lacked the political power to attempt banishment, but whatever the reason it made a lasting difference.

In the centuries since Rome fell the crucifix and the empty cross have been sewn into flags, cast into jewelry, made into furniture, sculpted on holy vessels, carved on tombstones, and set on top of houses of worship as a symbol of resurrection. In secular versions, the red cross is known around the world as a symbol of physical healing and disaster relief, and the green cross stands for safety. The one-time symbol of evil is now so filled with the karma of good that mythology gives a cross the power to destroy vampires and other creatures of infamy.

Today, we must consider the southern cross. Those who recall the evil of slavery want to blow it up, tear it down, paint it over, and plow it under. They see the Confederate battle flag as so evil that it must be banned, never to be seen again.

Unfortunately, as history has repeatedly shown, banned symbols don’t fade away. Hating them simply adds hate, and instead, they gain power. A half-century down the road any racist who wants to shatter the peace of a community will be able to do so in five seconds, by spray painting on the church door a rectangle with an X inside.

This time, can we choose the other path? Some members of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church have forgiven the murderer. Is it so much more difficult to forgive a symbol of a war no one alive remembers?

And what if forgiveness could go further? What if, as Americans, we could embrace the “stars and bars” flag? What if we resurrected it to fly as a symbol of the progress we as a nation have made since the Civil War ended slavery a century and a half ago?

Yes, we have made progress. I remember a time of separate water fountains and restrooms, and today for almost all of us that just seems stupid.

Is racism finished? No, the equality glass is but half-full. But better that, than clenching our fist around a glass that’s half-empty. Regardless of the possibilities, let’s forego anger and hatred. Let’s not hand another cross to the spray-cans of evil.

A Good Gun Story

Here’s the story of a heroic former CNN employee who will NOT make it into the Anderson Cooper CNN Heroes extravaganza. She and her husband may be survivors—CNN loves the survivor schtick—but “former Headline News anchor and CNN correspondent Lynne Russell” is lucky to have made it into the headlines (no matter; she’s alive):

Chuck de Caro and his wife, … Lynne Russell, were on a road trip and spending the night at an Albuquerque motel when de Caro killed the man during what Russell called an attempted robbery.

Police identified the dead man as 27-year-old Tomorio Walton from Memphis, Tennessee. He was in violation of his parole, police said, and it was not clear how long he had been in the Albuquerque area.

Albuquerque police said they have yet to question de Caro, who had surgery for his wounds.

Officer Fred Duran said no charges were expected to be filed against de Caro. Russell said her husband fired in self-defense.

“I am really proud of him,” Russell said. “I thank him over and over for saving my life. He really is my hero.”

Russell said the gunman came into their Motel 6 room through an open door after she had just returned from getting something out of the car. He pushed her into the room.

De Caro, who worked at CNN in the mid-1980s as special assignments correspondent, was coming out of the bathroom after taking a shower and saw Russell being held at gunpoint.

“He tried to change the guy’s mind,” Russell said.

The gunman wanted money and other valuables, she said.

She told him she would look in her purse to see what they had. She reached down and put into the purse one of two handguns the couple had in a side table. She gave the handbag to her husband.

Russell said the guns were legal, something police are still investigating.

The man’s behavior was increasingly erratic, Russell said. He told them to get a briefcase he saw.

The couple explained there was nothing of value in the bag, Russell said, but the man lunged at them and “went around the bed and then opened fire on Chuck. There was a firefight inside the room.”

De Caro was shot once in the leg and twice in the abdomen.

He fired all the rounds in the first handgun, then picked up the other and shot the man, whom police identified in a statement as the “offender in the altercation.” He was found in the parking lot and later died at a hospital, CNN affiliate KOAT-TV in Albuquerque reported.
